Some beautiful matched examples of original 'Vaseline' beads .. their popular name probably deriving from the colour of the petroleum jelly or its
bottle. Produced from the mid-1800s onwards, often with Uranium used as the colorant .. making these earlier beads fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Scientific tests have shown that this is in such small trace amounts that one would have to wear a necklace every day for very many years, to achieve the same radiation exposure as having an x-ray or taking a flight at 30,000 feet.
Unlike the flood of badly made copies found in profusion for sale everywhere, especially in South Africa, these are genuine and display the lovely smooth patina of over 100 years of wear.
