Protective talismen which often contain holy verses .. triangular Telsum are considered to offer protection against the evil eye and the crescent shapes, protection from the power of the moon. Usually the work of the talented Oromo silversmiths from the Southern and Eastern Highlands.

With designs usually specific to the towns or provinces where they were made, they reflect a variety of historic influences including Greek, Latin, Egyptian and Celtic.

They are traditionally cast using the lost wax method or cut from
Maria Theresa Talers ( dollars ) and other silver coins.
