Venetian Green - White and Yellow Hearts - Cornaline d'Aleppo
Green hearts: opaque red glass over a translucent green core, first introduced in the 1600's - traded into the Americas by the Spanish & still found in limited numbers in West Africa today.
White and Yellow hearts: translucent red glass over coloured opaque cores, introduced in the   early 1800's by the Venetians, remain popular beads, which are still in production.
Newly discovered Selenium was used in the production of the translucent red outer glass between approximately 1890 and 1930, giving a more garish ruby red outer colour. Its use was discontinued when it became more expensive than the gold which had been used previously.
